Tarmac awards four science scholarships to area graduates
Press Release – July 2, 2009
Tarmac America, in partnership with the Levy County Schools Foundation, awarded four science scholarships to area students who have shown a proficiency in math and science. This is the second year that Tarmac has awarded $500 college scholarships to graduates from the four Levy County high schools.
The four scholarship winners for 2009 are Mercedes McClain of Bronson High School; Brandy Winningham of Williston High School; El Son Wong of Chiefland High School; and Michele DiMaggio of Cedar Key High School.
To be eligible for the scholarship, each recipient was required to have a minimum 3.0 GPA in high school, successfully completed course work in science and math, plans to study science or math in college, and have demonstrated leadership and social responsibility by participating in extra-curricular activities. The scholarships were awarded during presentations at each high school in May.
"At Tarmac we want to recognize the hard work each of these students put forth in high school and want to help them as they continue their studies in college. As a part of the Levy County business community, Tarmac has a vested interest in our area’s young people and their future success,” said Jeff Harris, Tarmac’s plant manager in Levy County, and a member of the Levy County Schools Foundation.
